New Year & Water Festival Celebration (13 April 2014,Sun)

Dear All Dhamma Friends,

This year on April 13–17 (Sunday to Thursday) 2014 marks the Lunar New Year festive season in the calendar of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Sri Lanka. This New Year is common to most South and Southeast Asian nations, both Hindu and Buddhists. Traditionally, people celebrate in different ways to mark the welcoming New Year.
We are therefore, pleased to inform you that on 13th April(Sunday) 2014, at our Vihara (19 Novena Terrace, Singapore 307912) there will be special services to invoke blessings for good health, happiness and world peace; and offering traditional food to the Sanghas and sharing to all participants on this auspicious occasion as follow.

· On 13th April (Sunday), we will have activities like special chanting, blessing, Dhamma talk and sharing merits, as scheduled below:

o 09:30 – Chanting, observing Five Precepts, Meditation
o 11:20 – Buddha Puja
o 11:30 – Lunch for the Sangha and sharing traditional food to devotees
o 13:00 – Blessing and Dhamma Talk
o 13:45 – Sharing Merits
o 14:00 – Bathing Buddha

Special Retreat

Dear All,

It is our pleasure to inform you that there will be a two-day Vipassana Meditation Retreat at Oxford Buddha Vihara (Singapore) on 15-16 February 2014 (Saturday and Sunday) from 09:00 am to 17:00 pm. The Retreat will be led by Sayadaw Ashin Pandita who is a founder of Amatadayi Patipatti Kammatthana Centre in Irrawaddy division of Myanmar and he has been leading the centre for more than ten years.

This retreat will be conducted only in Burmese on the practice of Mokok Vipassana Meditation Technique (one of the well-known meditation techniques in Myanmar) which is to understand Padiccasamuppada or the Dependent Origination.

We firstly would like to ask for your understanding for any inconvenience you may face at OBVS as the space is limited because the room is available for only a maximum of 25 people. However, we will try our best to serve all Yogyi.

Chinese New Year activity

Dear All,

We will be celebrating Chinese New Year on 02 February 2014 (Sunday) at Oxford Buddha Vihara (Singapore) Center. New Year Chanting

It is a pleasure to let you all know that Oxford Buddha Vihara Singapore (OBVS) is organizing a special overnight chanting for bidding farewell to the Year 2013 and welcoming New Year 2014 to invoke New Year blessing for all. There will be chanting of Pathana, Ratana Sutta (Discourse of the Jewels), Mangala Sutta (Discourse on blessing) and Metta Sutta (Discourse on Loving kindness).
There will also be another special chanting of the Lord Buddha’s Inspired Utterance which is the first verse of the Buddha after self enlightenment (Aneka Jati Samsaram…..) for Buddha Puja in honoring and remembrance the quality of the Lord Buddha. Therefore, whoever has Buddha image to be honored can bring to OBVS on this auspicious occasion.

One Day Meditation Retreat on Non-self (Anatta) at OBVS (10 Nov 2013, Sun)

Dear all dhamma brothers and sisters,

Please be informed that this coming Sunday(10th Nov 2013) is our monthly one-day meditation retreat. The programme is from 9:30am to 4:00pm. We are very honored to have the deputy abbot of Oxford Buddha Vihara (UK), Venerable Dr. Pannyavamsa to lead the retreat on the day.
Ven Dr. Pannyavamsa is a learned Theravada Buddhist monk and have learned meditation under various teachers from Myanmar, Thailand and Sri Lanka. He has also taken intensive meditation courses for the last two Vassas (rain retreat) under Longpor Tee of Northern Thailand. Longpor Tee is a 95-year-old meditation master and a Shan native speaker. He is also an uncle to our OBV Chief Abbot Ven Dr. Dhammasami. His meditation method is mainly focused on Anatta, No-self based on Anatta Lakkhana Sutta.
We are fortunate that Ven Dr. Pannyavamsa will be able to share his invaluable knowledge of dhamma, especially on Anatta no-self teaching of the Buddha, what he has experienced. Therefore, all are welcome and no registration is needed. Luncheon and light refreshment will be served to all participants.

The end of Buddhist lent & Abhidhamma Day (19. 10. 2013, Sat)

Dear all,

We would like to inform you that this coming 19th October 2013(Sat) is a special full moon day or Abhidhamma Day, the end of rain retreat. It is considered significant occasion for Buddhists around the world especially; Buddhist People in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Lao and Cambodia. This day not only marks the end of Buddhist lent but also the day of Abhidhamma, the day that the Buddha completed his Abhidhamma teaching in Tavatimsa heaven and returned to human world.
Therefore, on this special occasion, the Oxford Buddha Vihara (Singapore) is organizing a ceremony to mark this event on 19th October 2013 (Sat) by lighting candles and reciting Abhidhamma Patthana from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the evening. At the end of recitation of Abhidhamma, there will be a dhamma discussion by our chief resident monk Venerable Vayaminda.
